The Story Behind Flying Cow Farms

How two families came together to start a farming business

By Christa Falb

November 2018: Mat and Jason began talking years ago about wanting to purchase a farm and start farming again. They looked at ranches in Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska.

November 2019: Jason and Mat drove through southeastern Wyoming, southwestern South Dakota, and northwestern Nebraska. They determined that ranches in these areas were not feasible due to proximity to our homes.

February 2020: Upon further investigation,  Mat and Kris found the Taberry estate located in Wadena, MN. An offer was made to purchase the farm in April 2020.

“Flying Cow Farms are piloted by two airmen who are farmers at heart.”

May 2020: 94 head of beef cattle arrive on the farm. Mat and Jason work tirelessly to mend fences, install electric fences, and install wells for drinking troughs.

Late June/July 2020: The first cutting of Alfalfa was begun which yielded 85 round bales. Meadow hay was cut as well which yielded 45 round bales.

August 2020: A second cutting of both Alfalfa and Meadow hay have been done yielding a total of 90 round bales.

November 2020: Most of cows went to auction. Very hard to find meat processing due to COVID-19 so not many of the cows could we keep for ourselves.

April 2021: Spring cleaning of the equipment to get ready for plowing of new Alfalfa fields.

April 22, 2021: Got our herd of cows. Total head: 104 mixture of Angus, Hereford and one Charlois!
